From being a long-time benefactor of the University of the Philippines (UP) basketball team, the bilyonaryo Gokongwei family is stepping up its involvement in sports by sponsoring the Philippine men’s and women’s football teams via GoTyme Bank.

Freddy Gonzalez, the director of the national teams for the Philippine Football Federation, announced the staging of GoTyme Cup, a tri-national competition, in September 2025.

The competition will feature the Philippine men’s football team going against athletes from South Africa and another country. The event is expected to be held annually, with the women’s team participating at a later date.

“GoTyme Bank is a sponsor of the national teams now. There’s going to be an announcement about that soon. But one of the things that we have with them is the GoTyme Cup,” Gonzalez said.

The Gokongweis’ investment in collegiate basketball paid off handsomely in 2024, with the UP Fighting Maroons winning the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball championship trophy.

Their support is seen to provide a boost to the Philippine football squads, with the men’s team clinching a semifinal finish in the 2024 ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup.
