Original choice: Marcos keen on ‘retiring’ Pascual, wants economic czar Frederick for DTI post

President Marcos is reportedly making more changes in his Cabinet, with Trade and Industry Secretary Alfredo E. Pascual expected to get the boot in favor of economic czar Frederick Go.

Multiple Babblers said Marcos has long wanted to axe Pascual not only because of his subpar performance, but also because of his failure to connect with consumers in the face of rising inflation.

Since his appointment two years ago, the 75-year-old Pascual has been widely perceived as ineffective. The former University of the Philippines president is a member of the Upsilon Sigma Phi fraternity.

The sources suggest that the President is now leaning towards his original choice for the DTI post, Go, who currently holds a Cabinet secretary rank as head of the newly created Office of the Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs.

If Go finally gives in to the President’s wish, he will take on the DTI post on a concurrent basis.

Amid talks of his firing, Babbler said Pascual has been going around the business community trying to elicit a statement of support for his continued stay.
