The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is recognizing the vital role of art and culture in the global fight against climate change and is shifting gears to become a Zero Theater.
Through the “Zero Theater: Climate Change and the Performing Arts” webinar series, the CCP educates the public about climate change, highlights the role of performing artists in climate action, and shares tips for sustainable art productions.
“In the past, performing arts venues were heavy users of energy. We must shift the paradigm. We must look at how theaters and performing venues can reduce their carbon footprints,” said Eva Mari Salvador, head of the CCP Arts Education Department.
Salvador highlighted the CCP’s current initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint, including recycling paper, using rechargeable batteries and LED lights, building sewage treatment facilities, and partnering with organizations that offer recycling services.
The CCP is also incorporating green practices into the ongoing rehabilitation of its main building, ensuring it becomes more sustainable without altering its architectural design.
It has been an active supporter of Earth Day for several years, featuring sustainable art pieces that promote environmental awareness.
Additionally, the CCP plans to explore renewable energy sources like wind and solar power to further reduce its carbon footprint.
The organization has joined the Broadway Green Alliance (BGA), which promotes environmentally friendly practices in the performing arts industry.
