From colonial entertainment to social commentary: Balagtasan gets a modern remix

BILYONARYO.COM

Balagtasan, a Filipino tradition of poetic jousting, has transcended its roots as colonial-era entertainment.

Once a source of light entertainment, it evolved into a platform for tackling social and political issues.

Debaters, known as “mambabalagtas,” use wit, rhyme, and factual arguments to engage audiences in thought-provoking discussions.

Fast forward to today, where modern entertainment dominates. To keep the spirit of Balagtasan alive, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is launching “BaRaptasan,” a contemporary twist that incorporates rap music. This unique competition focuses on the clash between tradition and modernity, a relevant theme for today’s society.

Mark your calendars! The BaRaptasan Grand Finals will be held on April 6, 2 PM, at the Rizal Park Open-Air Auditorium.

Ten passionate finalists from diverse backgrounds and regions will battle it out. Get ready to be captivated by groups like Ang Mga Supling ni Angela, Bagong Koronadal Advocates, and Waraptasan, each bringing their unique storytelling and performance skills to the stage.
