The Philippines successfully secured investments totaling at least $4 billion across various sectors during President Bongbong Marcos’ recent visit to Germany.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday morning, Marcos highlighted Germany’s role as the economic powerhouse of the European Union. He emphasized the significance of last year’s substantial investments from Germany, signifying their confidence in the Philippines as a key partner in the Asia-Pacific region.

He also expressed eagerness for further collaborations in climate action and energy transition.

Marcos made history as the first Philippine president in a decade to address German business leaders, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Germany, established on October 8, 1954.

During the business forum,Marcos witnessed the exchange of eight agreements, including three letters of intent (LOI) from various German companies, two memoranda of agreement (MOA), and three memoranda of understanding (MOU).

One of the LOIs focuses on developing a partner hospital into a training center to support the training needs of lower-tier hospitals, while another aims to establish an Innovation Think Tank (ITT) hub to foster an inclusive innovation ecosystem in the Philippines.

The third LOI pertains to a strategic and digital partnership in healthcare with the Department of Health to revolutionize healthcare in the Philippines.

A MOA was also signed between the Philippine government and a German company for the rehabilitation and recultivation of degraded farmlands in the Philippines. Another MOA aims to expand collaborations in mobility solutions, software services, manufacturing, and other sectors.

Additionally, three MOUs were signed for investment in a fully integrated solar cell manufacturing facility, a manufacturing facility for high-end automobiles and armored vehicles, and data centers to host a digital insurance platform for the Philippines and the ASEAN region.

In his speech, Marcos highlighted Germany’s importance as one of the Philippines’ key business partners, citing its status as the largest economy in the European Union, with significant technological and innovative capabilities.

In 2022, Germany ranked as the Philippines’ 12th largest trading partner, with total trade reaching $4.7 billion.

Germany remains the Philippines’ top trading partner in the European Union.
