From bamboo to barong: Check out Francis Libiran’s latest fashion innovation

Acclaimed Filipino fashion designer Francis Libiran is turning the sturdy bamboo into sleek couture with the help of science.

Libiran collaborated with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to put together an intricately detailed barong Tagalog made out of bamboo fabric.

Canadian-born Kyle Jennermann, also known by his influencer name Kulas, wore Libiran’s creation when he took his oath as a naturalized Filipino citizen.

“Becoming a Filipino citizen, knowing I am wearing something not just local, but the first of its kind… incredible,” wrote Jennermann, who runs the “Becoming Filipino” Facebook page.

“It meant so much to me that Filipino designer Francis Libiran came up with this Pintados-inspired Barong. It is embroidered with intricate art deco signature details, and made out of Bamboo fabric,” he added.
