Contrary to popular belief, being an accredited service provider of a healthcare management organization (HMO) isn’t a quick way to make a buck for doctors.
Twitter user @DocHappy gave a reality check of the challenges medical doctors face by sharing a snapshot of his paltry paycheck from an HMO.
HMO-accredited doctors provide consultations and medical procedures which are charged to a patient’s health card.
Another doctor tweeted about the reality of the HMO business.
HMOs here are earning billions of pesos annually. Tapos hindi commensurate ang amount na binibigay at delayed ang bigay ng fees.
Doctors have to earn their keep as well. I don’t condone colleagues who charge exorbitant fees but I also don’t advocate exploitation. pic.twitter.com/tR6zHrJyj7

“This is the reason I did not affiliate myself with any HMO. I spend time on each patient, sometimes taking an hour or so,” Twitter user @hellokidneyMD said. “I know my services are worth more than this. I gladly refer patients with HMOs to other accredited nephrologists.”

It appears that HMOs are out to exploit doctors who are fresh in the field.
For starting specialists who rely on quantity of patients minsan walang choice huhu. Our medical societies should really advocate for us better. Hay dami kong migraine sa HMO issues.

Kung pwede lang po taga bitawan Sir but it's truly difficult to start here without them and kawawa rin kasi mga patients. Pahirap rin ng pahirap ang buhay (since Golden era na nga), and our patients would mostly rely on HMOs to be able to seek care and do the labs.
