The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has intercepted contraband cigarettes valued at approximately P160.3 million aboard an intercepted motorboat off the coast of Tawi-Tawi.
The BOC’s official statement revealed that the vessel, bearing the label “MB INDAH NADZ,” was found to be transporting 2,798 master cases of cigarettes under the brand “Oakley Original.”
The interception unfolded in the waters surrounding Baturapac Island, Tandubas, Tawi-Tawi.
According to BOC officials, the motorboat’s crew, comprising 12 individuals, failed to produce legitimate documentation substantiating the lawful importation of the seized cigarette consignment.
Subsequent to a meticulous inventory, the seized cigarettes have been safeguarded within a secure warehouse facility in Zamboanga City.
This measure has been undertaken pending the initiation and progression of the requisite seizure and forfeiture procedures.
BOC Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio reiterated the agency’s unwavering commitment to thwarting smuggling and curbing illicit activities.
He emphasized the imperative of discouraging potential wrongdoers from engaging in acts that can significantly undermine the economic landscape.
