Bilyonaryo Manny V. Pangilinan’s media partnership with the Lopez family is finally yielding positive results in the television industry.
A Babbler said TV5, under Pangilinan’s leadership, has achieved the second spot in the ratings competition, overtaking Felipe Gozon’s GTV, with the support of ABS-CBN’s popular teleseryes.
According to Nielsen ratings, TV5 witnessed a steady increase in audience share over four consecutive months: 9.5% in February, 9.9% in March, 10% in April, and 10.4% in May. In contrast, GTV experienced a decline, landing in third place with an audience share of 8.4% in February, 7.8% in March, 7.9% in April, and 8.5% in May.
GMA, GTV’s parent channel, maintained its leading position with ratings of 45% in February, 45.3% in March and April, and 44% in May.
Since the cessation of ABS-CBN’s broadcast three years ago, GMA and GTV have consistently dominated the top two spots in 2021 (45.7% and 9.7%) and 2022 (44.4% and 11.8%).
Following the content partnership agreement between Pangilinan and ABS-CBN chairman Mark Lopez, TV5 has witnessed a steady rise in ratings, culminating in February’s release of the popular teleserye “Batang Quiapo,” featuring Coco Martin in a leading role. The resounding success of “Batang Quiapo” had a ripple effect on the ratings of other shows like “The Iron Heart” and “Dirty Linen,” propelling TV5 to even greater heights in May.
The Kapatid network’s ascent becomes even more impressive considering the stronger signal strength and wider coverage of GTV.
TV5’s ratings potential could have been higher if not for the concurrent airing of ABS-CBN’s popular shows on another free TV channel, A27, which currently holds the fourth position in the ratings with an average rating of six percent from March to May.
Additionally, ABS-CBN broadcasts its primetime programs on CineMo (digital TV) and various online platforms, including ABS-CBN Entertainment’s YouTube channel, Facebook page, and iWantTFC, as well as TFC for international viewers.
TV5’s rise in ratings has also coincided with Pangilinan’s investments in enhancing and expanding TV5’s coverage from Northern Luzon to Southern Mindanao.
Is this the reason why Gozon agreed to bring in “It’s Showtime,” produced by his network’s long-time rival ABS-CBN, to bolster GTV’s lunchtime programming, even if it meant competing for viewership with blocktimer TAPE, which occupied the same time slot on GMA?
