International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) is making strategic moves to bolster the Port of Manzanillo in Mexico.
The company’s subsidiary, Contecon Manzanillo S.A. (CMSA), has joined forces with other port terminals and operators to establish the Association of Terminals and Operators of Manzanillo (ASTOM).
The formation of ASTOM aims to enhance the competitiveness and efficiency of Mexico’s most vital port by focusing on improved connectivity, process optimization, and innovation, all while upholding principles of social and environmental responsibility.
The Port of Manzanillo is a crucial logistics hub, handling a significant portion of the country’s container traffic, with 40 percent of containers entering and exiting Mexico and 70 percent of import cargo arriving on the Pacific coast.
CMSA, as an influential player in the port, will lead ASTOM for the next few years through its CEO, José Antonio Contreras, who also serves as the president of the association.
Contreras expressed the association’s commitment to the continuous development of the Port of Manzanillo, aiming to support and facilitate the growth of Mexican foreign trade.
ASTOM members account for over 90 percent of the port’s activity, showcasing the association’s significance within the port sector.
With an estimated 35,000 jobs generated and substantial contributions to taxes, customs revenue, and state income, ASTOM stands as one of the most influential business groups in the country.
