Will long-time Eli Remolona succeed Felipe Medalla as central bank chief?
Tongues are wagging about Remolona’s possible appointment after he was spotted with members of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s economic team during an investor roadshow in Singapore.
He, alongside Deputy Governor Francisco Dakila, Jr., represented the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas alongside National Economic and Development Authority Secretary Arsenio Balisacan, Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno, and Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman. Completing the delegation is National Treasurer Rosalia de Leon, a career Finance executive.
The trip seeks to convince multinational companies to send their capital or expand business operations in the Philippines.
Remolona spent most of his career in at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Bank of International Settlements before he accepted the post as Monetary Board member, the highest policy-making body of BSP, beginning August 2022.
He was also a former director in the Ayala-owned Bank of the Philippine Islands.
