Department of Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno has attributed the delayed implementation of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) toll hike to the “inaction” of previous governments.
“The increase piled up because of the inaction of previous administrations,” Diokno told reporters.
“The Ferdinand Marcos Jr. administration had to act on petitions from 2010,” he said.
According to Diokno, it is crucial for the government to uphold its contractual obligations, as failing to do so would undermine its credibility in future agreements.
The finance chief said the petitions were carefully reviewed and analyzed, and that they were approved objectively and fairly.
“Government needs to perform its contractual obligations under the STOAs (supplemental toll operations agreement). We’re promoting PPPs (public-private partnerships). And the government will have no credibility as a partner if it does not comply with its contractual obligations under past PPP contracts,” he said.
