The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is pushing for the privatization of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) by the first quarter of 2024.
According to Transportation Undersecretary for Aviation and Airports Roberto Lim, there is a possibility that the privatization process could be concluded within the specified timeframe.
Lim emphasized the potential benefits of NAIA’s privatization, particularly in terms of enhancing passenger and flight movement efficiency while generating income for the government.
By upgrading NAIA, introducing operational efficiencies would allow for increased passenger capacity, more flights, and ultimately, higher revenues, leading to a larger share of profits for the government.
Addressing concerns surrounding the privatization, Lim clarified the role of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) and the fate of airport employees.
He emphasized that all airport assets at NAIA would remain under government ownership, with the private concessionaire having a limited role in operations and management.
The privatization of NAIA represents a significant step towards improving the airport’s performance and overall service quality.
The DOTr is committed to implementing a smooth transition that maximizes the airport’s potential while ensuring the continued welfare of employees and the sustainable growth of the aviation sector.
