The Bureau of Customs (BOC) conducted a raid on a forklift importer owned by the family of Lawrence Tan, the president of Wack Wack Golf and Country Club, over allegations of smuggling.
Acting on a letter of authority signed by Customs Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio, a team led by Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service Chief Alvin Enciso carried out the operation at the office and warehouse of Paragon Trading & Services Corp. located on Gil J. Puyat Avenue in Makati City on May 25.
According to a report by Abante.com, Paragon failed to provide the necessary documents proving the payment of taxes and duties for its imported forklifts.
The BOC suspects that the government has suffered losses amounting to hundreds of millions of pesos due to the alleged technical smuggling of these forklifts.
Paragon has been given a 15-day period to furnish the BOC with the required documentation before it can resume its operations.
Tan, who happens to be the son-in-law of miner Felipe Yap, is seeking for a new term as director of Wack Wack in next month’s election.
