Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC) announced that the initial phase of the LRT Cavite Extension is expected to commence commercial operations as early as September 2024.
LRMC president and CEO Juan Alfonso said the revised timeline indicates a month earlier than the company’s previous announcement that the new line system would begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2024.
The project, which is currently 83 percent complete, has made significant progress. As of March, the Redemptorist Station reached a completion rate of 56 percent, the MIA Station at 61 percent, Asia World at 51 percent, Ninoy Aquino Station at 55 percent, and Dr. Santos Station at 60 percent.
The remaining stations between Las Piñas and Niog are scheduled to become fully operational by 2027.
Once completed, the 11.7-kilometer, 8-station LRT-1 Cavite Extension Project will connect Baclaran in Parañaque City to Bacoor, Cavite.
In an effort to address long queues and enhance commuter convenience, LRMC and digital banking app Maya have launched a QR ticketing system at the LRT Line 1.
Manuel V. Pangilinan, chairman of Maya and LRMC, said”: The LRT-1 QR Ticketing project marks a significant milestone in public transportation, where everyone can enjoy faster, safer, and more convenient digital transactions.”
He emphasized the project’s role in modernizing the transportation system and promoting wider-scale adoption of digital payments.
Commuters can easily purchase their single journey LRT-1 QR tickets using the Maya app and scan the generated QR ticket at dedicated “Fast Lane” turnstiles located at all LRT-1 Stations, ensuring a quick and seamless process.
