The Department of Energy (DOE) recommends ditching the desktop computer and using a laptop or smartphone instead to save on energy consumption.
According to Energy Undersecretary Wimpy Fuentabella, using a laptop instead of a desktop can instantly result in a 50 percent reduction in energy usage
For an even greater reduction of up to 90 percent, Fuentabella suggests using a smartphone instead of a desktop computer.
Unlike other countries that subsidize their energy sector, the Philippines has higher energy costs similar to those of Japan and Singapore.
The country imports 57 percent of its primary energy supply, leaving domestic power prices vulnerable to global market changes.
Fuentabella also advises setting the thermostat of air conditioners to 24 or 25 degrees Celsius instead of 18 to achieve an additional savings of P800 to P1200 per month.
