ERC vows to resolve decade-long pending applications for universal charge for missionary electrification

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has committed to addressing the universal charge for missionary electrification applications submitted by state-owned National Power Corporation (NPC) this year.

If approved, these applications could potentially result in a rate increase of P0.15 per kilowatt-hour.

Under the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001, NPC is responsible for supplying power to off-grid or missionary areas through its Small Power Utilities Group.

However, its applications for eight universal charges for missionary electrification have been pending for a decade.

ERC chairperson Monalisa Dimalanta recently announced that the agency plans to resolve two of NPC’s cases every quarter, beginning in March, until the rate increase of P0.15 per kWh is achieved. These funds will be utilized by NPC to purchase fuel for the SPUG areas.

Previously, NPC had informed electric cooperatives that electricity service in the SPUG areas would be reduced starting February 1 due to a fuel supply shortage and a delay in UCME subsidy payment.

However, the reduction has yet to be implemented, and NPC is hopeful that additional funds will become available to prevent it.
