Senator Cynthia Villar isn’t optimistic about the success of latest efforts to amend the 1987 Constitution, which are coming from the House of Representatives.
The wife of ultra bilyonaryo Manny Villar said it’s unlikely for the proposal to fly under President Bongbong Marcos, with no less than the Chief Executive himself lukewarm to amending the Constitution.
“I have been there for so long. Nine years in Congress and 12 years in the Senate. That’s a long time. More or less you know what the people want,” Villar said. “Whenever it’s brought up it’s not popular.”
Local and foreign business chambers have long been lobbying for the lifting of foreign ownership restrictions, saying it will allow more investments to flow into the Philippines and develop local industries.
The House recently passed a resolution calling for a constitutional convention, as well as a bill providing details of the proposed gathering of delegates. The measures will be sent to the Senate for further deliberations.
