The sunken tanker in Oriental Mindoro has caused an oil spill that has endangered 341 households on Semirara Island in Caluya, Antique.
Consunji-led Semirara Mining and Power Corp. (SMPC), in partnership with the Department of Energy (DoE), has been working with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Department of Health (DoH), local government units, and affected residents to clean up and contain the hazardous waste.
The oil spill has affected almost 3 kilometers of shoreline, impacting 341 households that rely on fishing for a livelihood.
Responders have recovered 4,590 kilograms of oil-contaminated waste, and the SMPC Emergency Response Team (ERT) has devoted over 4,700 man-hours to the cleanup.
An oil spill containment boom has been installed to protect reseeded giant clams in Semirara Marine Hatchery.
SMPC relief operations are ongoing, providing food packs to all 341 affected households, including rice, canned goods, noodles, and produce from the company’s agro and poultry model farms.
