Greenhills Shopping Center in San Juan remains on the list of notorious markets for fake and pirated goods, according to the United States Trade Representative (USTR).
The Notorious Markets List identifies 39 online markets and 33 physical markets that are reported to engage in or facilitate substantial trademark counterfeiting or copyright piracy.
Findings of the 2022 review showed that Greenhills Center is among the physical markets engaged in or facilitate substantial trademark counterfeiting or copyright piracy.
“Currently, many of the storefronts in this mall sell counterfeit goods, including electronics, perfumes, watches, shoes, accessories, and fashion items.
Law enforcement authorities have taken action to seize counterfeit luxury goods, notably during a high-profile raid in April 2022,” the USTR said.
“Right holders report enforcement activity in the form of warning letters and subsequent suspension of business, but the targets of enforcement often evade such efforts by moving the location of their stalls,” it added.
The USTR said Greenhills Shopping Center has expressed willingness to cooperate with authorities.
It hopes that with the opening of its new seven-story building will provide leverage to transition sellers of counterfeit goods into “legitimate” sellers.
Greenhills Center is a project of Ortigas Land, which is jontly owned by the Ayala family and the Sy-blings.
