The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System Regulatory Office has slapped Maynilad Water Services Inc. with a P27.48 million penalty for failing to supply 24/7 water to its customers serviced by the Putatan water treatment plant from December 2022 to January 2023.
MWSS RO officer in charge Lee Robert M. Britanico said the penalty would be in the form of bill rebates to customers and would depend on the extent suffered which could vary from one barangay or city to another.
Britanico said Maynilad had recognized the problem as it happened during the holidays when people were at home. The utility firm even offered to pay an initial amount of P18 million as penalty, he said.
“From our determination, we also saw some other factors which is why we came up with the P27 million penalty,” Britanico said in an online media briefing.
The rebates will be reflected on the bills of customers in February.
Britanico said the rebate for some customers may even exceed their monthly bill which means that the excess credit will be carried over to the next month.
The MWSS will hold a public information drive on the rebates on January 31 to discuss the details.
“From our investigation, there are things that could have been done differently para hindi nangyari yung interruptions, plus the fact na COVID pa tapos holiday season, talagang malaki ang epekto nito,” Britanico said.
This is the third time that Maynilad is being penalized for water interruption problems caused by the Putatan treatment plant.
While the MWSS is giving Maynilad the opportunity to address the problem, Britanico said the water firm needs to address this once and for all because the penalty will be much bigger if it happens again.
“Ang computation na ito is actually telling Maynilad na we have penalized you before and we are penalizing you again,” Britanico said.
“Magiging malaki na ang rebate if ever maulit ito. Hindi pwedeng hindi nila maaddress dahil bibigyan namin sila ng mas malaking penalty.” (Eileen Mencias)
