All systems go! Mindanao spot market to start commercial operations on January 26

The much-awaited and long-delayed electricity spot market in Mindanao will start commercial operations by January 26, according to the latest circular of the Department of Energy.

DOE issued a circular declaring the commercial operation of the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) in the Mindanao grid starting next month.

The Mindanao Visayas Interconnection Project is slated for completion by March, which will need the implementation of the WESM in Mindanao to allow the transfer and settlement of electricity in the two islands.

To address concerns about the Lanao del Sur Electric Cooperative (LASURECO) and Maguindanao Electric Cooperative (MAGELCO), the circular directed PSALM to continue to supply the two cooperatives.

DOE said energy withdrawals of both ECs shall be exclusively allocated to the energy output of PSALM plants within the Bangsamoro area, such as Agus 1 and 2.
