First day hype! Smart, Globe SIM portals bog down over traffic as SIM registration starts

Thousands of mobile phone subscribers are raring to register their SIMs as a new law takes effect, causing the online portals of telco giants Smart and Globe to bog down Tuesday (December 27).

Both Smart and Globe links display gateway errors, while that of bilyonaryo Dennis Uy’s Dito Telecommunity is up and running for its limited customer base.

In an advisory, Smart said its technical team is working on “increasing capacity” for the SIM registration site to handle the volume of subscribers wanting to register.

Subscribers have six months to register their SIMs from December 27 in compliance with the SIM Registration Act signed into law by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The registration period may be extended by up to 120 days.

The information that should be provided by the subscriber include: full name, birthday, sex, present or official address, identification card and ID number.

Subscribers will also be asked to present any of the following ID cards with photo for identity verification: Passport, Philippine Identification System ID, driver’s license, NBI clearance, Police clearance, SSS ID, GSIS ID, firearms’ license to own and possess ID card, senior citizens’ ID, among others.
