Jordan Prieto-Valdes looks back to the time Siargao was ravaged by Typhoon Odette

Jordan Prieto-Valdes experienced in person how Typhoon Odette ravaged the island that she now calls home.

It was the strongest typhoon she has ever seen in her life and she vividly remembers what happened as if it happened yesterday.

“the next morning. walking to tawin-tawin for 2.5 hours (it’s usually 10min away by bike) just to check on darud’s family, literally climbing through branches of trees and debris on the street and stopping to talk to friends, exchanging war stories and nightmares,” she described the day after.

She then remembered the bayanihan spirit and the bad things that she witnessed.

“i will never forget the resilient kindness of a healing community, the power of private individuals, the intense heat and then never-ending rain, the shocking lack of government aid, all the politicians who came to take their photos and left, that one australian asshole who bought all the pancit canton from tag so that he could “resell it to hungry foreigners”, not thinking of how it’ll affect the locals who need food too, i remember it all,” Jordan wrote.

She became thankful for simple things such as clean water and the countless smiles of her fellow survivors.

Jordan raised P1.3 million in relief aid from her family and friends all around the world so they were able to help 230 families rebuild their homes. Not only that, they renovated a children’s daycare center in Burgos.

“i’m endlessly grateful that so much normalcy has returned in a relatively short amount of time. siargao is so alive again, so green, so happy,” Jordan said.

She reminded everyone to always be prepared for the worst.
