Meralco eyes US grant for feasibility study on nuclear reactors

The country’s biggest power distributor Manila Electric Co. wants to apply for a grant with the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) for a feasibility study on small nuclear reactors or SMRs.

In a recent media event, Meralco president Ray Espinosa said they have yet to submit a proposal to the USTDA.

“It’s for a feasibility study on SMRs,” Espinosa said.

Meralco has expressed openness to include nuclear power in the power supply mix.

The Marcos administration is pursuing nuclear power, such as SMRs, to address the country’s growing need for power.
