Harmie Constantino hit a game-winning chip-in birdie from 40 yards away in the second playoff hole to beat Rianne Mailxi in the rain-hit Villamor Match Play tournament of International Container Terminal Services Inc. held at the Villamor Golf Club in Pasay.
Constantino won the total pot of P280,000, the same prize that Tony Lascuna received after defeating Keanu Jahns in the men’s side of the first novelty event put up by the organizing Philippine Golf Tour to officially end the 2022 golfing season for the pros.
The diminutive Constantino had control for a majority of the final duel until she conceded on the 17th hole after Malixi’s tee shot landed just below the hole. But the eventual champ never gave up and won the last hole as Malixi hit the water on her approach.
“It’s unexplainable, hindi talaga ako makapaniwala (I just can’t believe it),” said Constantino.
Lascuña’s victory came as a big surprise for the affable Davaoeno shotmaker, who had braced for a grind-out duel with a young, power-hitting guy like Jahns after coming out of a rigorous route to the finals with victories over Gerald Rosales and Clyde Mondilla.
But he did expect to win. Driven by desire to end the season with a win after getting foiled to settle for runner-up finishes in the last three Philippine Golf Tour regular events at Eagle Ridge-Aoki, Riviera and Pradera Verde, Lascuna knew he had to level up his game.
“I’m very happy since this is my first win in a long while, especially after missing three close chances at Eagle Ridge, Riviera and Pradera Verde. I thought I would never win this year,” said Lascuna.
