President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has eased out a trusted lieutenant of Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno at the Bureau of Internal Revenue in favor of his wedding godson.
Malacañang announced Tuesday (November 15) the appointment of Romeo Lumagui Jr. as BIR Commissioner, replacing Lilia Guillermo.
Lumagui, a tax lawyer who once flexed his credentials on social media ahead of the May 9 polls, served as a BIR deputy commissioner prior to the promotion. His wife, Carmela Esquivias, is an abogado in the law firm of First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos, M & Associates.
Meanwhile, Guillermo has been Diokno’s loyal subordinate since his days at the Budget Department. She also transferred to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas when Diokno became central bank governor.
Guillermo once commented that she will study the P203 billion estate tax due from the Marcos heirs and said that if the documents prove it, she will personally ask the President to pay up.
