Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Ivan John Uy is reportedly in Romania days after the Commission on Appointments failed to confirm his nomination to the Cabinet.
A Babbler said Uy was absent at the oath taking Tuesday (October 4) of Cabinet members because he was in Romania for what appears to be a personal trip.
There’s also speculation, however, that Uy went to Romania for official business, to represent the country at the election of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) on October 3.
Uy announced that the Philippines was reelected to the ITU, with a term lasting from 2023 to 2028.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. named Uy, an abogado and IT expert, as DICT Secretary in May. Prior to joining the Cabinet, he was a consultant for the Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms and People’s Participation chaired by Marcos Jr’s sister, Sen. Imee Marcos.
The President reportedly chose between Uy and National Telecommunications Commission head Gamaliel Cordoba for the DICT seat.
It was Cordoba who signed the order telling ABS-CBN to stop its TV broadcasts and withdrew its occupied frequencies for failing to secure a fresh franchise from Congress in 2020.
Will Uy be back in DICT or is this trip a sign that his confirmation is still uncertain? Abangan!
