More budding entrepreneurs in Quezon City might sign up to sell on Lazada as a result of the partnership between the e-commerce platform’s chief, Ray Alimurung, and his wife, Mayor Joy Belmonte.
The local government of Quezon City has tapped Lazada to provide free livelihood training sessions for aspiring online sellers.
Belmonte even did the finger heart pose to match the Lazada logo as she visited the training sessions. Her husband Alimurung served as CEO of Lazada Philippines for four years before being assigned as chairman and senior advisor to the Lazada Group CEO.
Netizens saw through the post, with some flagging a potential conflict of interest. Others also took it as a sign of Belmonte’s political stance.
“Isn’t her husband the head honcho for Lazada Philippines? While initiatives like these are always welcome, I can’t help but be skeptical about what the bigger picture covers,” one Twitter user said.
Lazada conducted the training at the heels of the free publicity it received after its rival, Shopee, drew flak for hiring Toni Gonzaga as an endorser.
Wow, mayor Joy being a supportive kakampink through and through. https://t.co/BQ2JptdnQI
