No more blame game: DA helps Batanes farmers send garlic to Manila

The Department of Agriculture assisted farmers from Batanes in sending 600 kilos of garlic at the heels of an undersecretary’s scathing remark about their ignorance of market dynamics.

The DA said its Kadiwa Center in Quezon City received the garlic from Batanes last week. The supply travelled from Itbayat to the Sual Port in Pangasinan en route to Quezon City, with a total value of P78,000.

No details were given as to the retail price of the garlic, and the venues where it will be sold.

DA Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban drew flak earlier this month for blaming Batanes farmers for planting garlic without considering the market for their produce.

“Undersecretary Panganiban forgets that he is working for the DA and not as spokesperson of importers,” said Solidarity of Peasants Against Exploitation (STOP EXPLOITATION) Chairman Antonino Pugyao.
