Umeepal para sa eleksyon? New Deputy BIR Commissioner Lumagui flexes credentials on social media

Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Deputy Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. appears to be puffing up his image following his appointment to the plum government post.

Making the rounds on social media is an art card announcing Lumagui’s appointment, which was accompanied with a large photo of his face. Part of the text enumerated his credentials, which were as follows: “DCIR (Deputy Commissioner) Lumagui obtained his Juris Doctor degree at the Ateneo De Manila University School of Law where he graduated with Second Honors. He ranked 19th place at the Philippine Bar examination.”

The art card also featured a quote from him which read, “It is now time for everyone to work together, especially in this difficult time of economic slump.”

He was described as a “tax lawyer with decades of experience” even if he only became an abogado in 2006. He previously served as Regional Investigation Division chief of Revenue Region No. 7B of East NCR (National Capital Region).

The closeness of Lumagui and his wife, Carmela Esquivias, to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., apparently worked to his advantage in rising through the BIR’s ranks.

Esquivias works as an executive assistant to First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos. She has also been a part of the First Lady’s law firm, M & Associates, since 2019.

The First Couple stood as principal sponsors when Lumagui and Esquivias wed in 2019. Esquivias actively campaigned for Marcos in the 2022 elections, joining him on the campaign trail and appearing on promotional videos.
