The Department of Transportation (DOTr) mulls modernizing several provincial airports under the public private partnership (PPP) model.
” PPP should continue. We will invite the private sector to offer and support our PPP projects,” Transportation Secretary Jaime J. Bautista said.
Bautista said among the airports being considered for development, operations and maintenance by the private sector are the New Bohol (Panglao), Davao, Iloilo and Kalibo gateways.
The regional airport PPP projects were originally approved under a bundled PPP structure by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)-Investment Coordination Committee (NEDA-ICC) and the NEDA Board in 2016.
The Aboitiz Group, Chelsea Logistics Holdings Corp. of Davao-based businessman Dennis Uy, Philippine Airport Ground Support Solutions Inc. (PAGSS), Mega7 Construction Corp. and Prime Asset Ventures Inc. of the Villar Group earlier expressed their interest in redeveloping the airports.
Bautista is also looking at bidding out the development and rehabilitation of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), which was scrapped by the Duterte administration.
The NAIA project aims to alleviate the worsening air traffic congestion at the main gateway and resolve capacity constraints by reconfiguring and renovating facilities and enhancing operation and maintenance.
