The government is still moving at a snail’s pace for the rollout of COVID-19 booster shots even as around 1.5 million doses of vaccine are about to expire by the end of the month.
Bilyonaryo and GoNegosyo founder Joey Concepcion expressed frustration over the government’s lack of urgency as he stressed the need to use vaccines procured by the private sector.
“If you look at these expiring vaccines, that’s a lot of money,” Concepcion said, referring to their surplus Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines.
“Yes we have to focus on the first boosters, but the private sector bought these vaccines,” he said. “This is my frustration.”
President Bongbong Marcos mounted a bold target of 23 million Filipinos with a first booster shot by October, or within his first 100 days in office.
Currently, the second booster doses are limited to medical frontliners as well as senior citizens and those with comorbidities.
“The sense of urgency is not there,” Concepcion added. “Government is trying to do its best, but there is this body that is moving quite slow.”
