Davao-based businessman Dennis Uy’s DITO Telecommunity said the battle in the country’s telco landscape is about to heat up with the company expected to achieve 70 percent population coverage this month.
DITO said Ookla’s latest report showed the company has already made a dent in the dominance of its main competitors, indicating that the Philippines is a “duopoly no more”.
“This is just the beginning,” DITO chief administrative officer Adel Tamano said.
Tamano said the market is set to witness a full-blown competition among telco operators once DITO covers 70 percent of the population this month as part of its mandate in the certificate of public convenience and necessity awarded by the National Telecommunications Commission in 2019.
“We are confident that DITO can go head-to-head with the other two major players as penetrating more areas means capturing more share in the market,” he said.
Tamano said the Filipino consumers stand to benefit from this increased competition, with companies racing to provide the best connectivity and the best value for services.
DITO currently has more than nine million subscribers and is eyeing to hit 12 million by the end of the year.
It its currently present in more than 600 cities and municipalities.
