Universal Robina Corporation has been slapped with a P100,000 fine over a freak accident at its plant in Mandaue City that killed a factory worker.
According to a report by SunStar Cebu, worker Stephen Corilla was killed on June 2 after being sucked in by a pulverizing machine at URC’s plant.
The machine supposedly turned on without warning as Corilla was cleaning it.
The P100,000 fine was imposed by the Department of Labor and Employment Region 7 and was subsequently settled by the Gokongwei-owned company on June 7. The operation of URC’s sugar pulverizer machine has also been suspended after labor inspectors discovered that there was a defect in its safety device, SunStar reported.
Based on the report, Corilla’s manpower agency gave P97,300 to his family to cover the funeral and other expenses.
