SLEX extension to Bicol is a go; SMC inks toll operations deal with DPWH

A massive road project linking south of Metro Manila to Bicol Region is finally coming into fruition.
The Department of Public Works and Highways and conglomerate San Miguel Corp. signed on June 3 the supplemental toll operations agreement (STOA) for the South Luzon Expressway Toll Road 5 (SLEX TR5).
Estimated to cost P26.38 billion, SLEX TR5 aims to connect Quezon and Bicol provinces and provide better and safer access to tourism destinations, roro ports, fish ports.
It also seeks to address traffic congestion in the Bicol region.
The 417-kilometer TR5 will start at the South Luzon Expressway TR4 project in Barangay Mayao in Lucena City and end near the Matnog Ferry Port in Sorsogon.
TR4, a 4-lane toll road with 28 interchanges, has eight segments which will run parallel to the existing Philippine National Railways, Maharlika Highway and Padre Burgos National Road or Quirino Highway.
It is seen to cut travel time from nine hours to five hours when traveling from Lucena to Matnog Ferry Terminal.
The project is in line with SMC’s efforts to help transform Luzon into a growth powerhouse.
