Jaime Ponce de Leon shares the history of an influential piece of modern art

What a historical piece of art.
For those who haven’t seen it, Jaime Ponce de Leon shared on Instagram photos of “The Red Studio.” He described it as “a landmark of modern art with an exceptional and complex biography.”
It was commissioned from Matisse by Sergei Schukin who rejected it when the work was finished. Matisse will have it for the next 15 years until a London night club chose to house it.
“After 10 years, the club’s owner offered the artist to repurchase the painting but declined. It was then consigned to a gallery until 1948 when the Museum of Modern Art obtained funding to purchase what would ultimately become one of the most renowned and influential paintings of modern art,” Jaime wrote in the caption of his post.
