Keeping an eye on electricity usage may soon be a breeze: ERC to release rules on advanced metering this year

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) will come out with the rules on advanced metering Infrastructure (AMI) within the year, according to its top-ranking official.
The AMI refers to next-generation digital, electric meters that wirelessly send regular meter readings and provide a better understanding of your energy usage.
It gives customers the tools to manage their consumption thus promoting demand-side management and energy efficiency.
“We have a partner on this, and it is the subject of a study right now. We have not finalized anything yet but we have tapped some assistance from international funding agencies,” ERC chairperson Agnes Devanadera said.
She said ERC has tapped foreign consultants to study the AMI because such technology is advanced in other countries.
The AMI is also expected to promote operational efficiency of the distribution utilities.
Devanadera said the ERC welcomes these state-of-the-art technologies that will help consumers manage their electricity consumption.
” However, we must see to it that the installation of these AMI should not adversely affect the consumers in terms of paying higher electricity rates. We must protect the welfare and interests of our electricity consumers considering that our rates are one of the highest in the region and the government’s thrust is to make our electricity rates competitive and reasonable”, she said.
