Holcim Philippines (HLCM) chaired by bilyonaryo Tomas I. Alcantara has been punished by the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) for its excessive use of water in its cement plant in Bulacan.
HLCM reported that it was ordered by the NWRB to pay a fine of P56,490.
But HLCM claimed that the issue has already been addressed with its P17.9 million investments in the cement plant to ensure freshwater withdrawal is within the regulatory limit.
HLCM claimed it has improved the water cooling system of its kiln, raw mill, and cement mill with the conversion into a fully closed-loop water system to increase recycling rate.
It has also automated the water system; built more rainwater harvesting facilities; increased the use of rainwater collected in its lagoon, and replaced old water pipes to minimize leakages.
