Senator Francis Tolentino will invite teenage cockfighting aficionados to the next Senate hearing on e-sabong to prove GCash and Paymaya can’t stop minors from getting hooked on gambling sites.

In a statement, Tolentino said the Senate committee on public order and safety “might bring in the next hearings some cockfighting aficionados who are below legal age and were able to place bets in e-sabong using the GCash platform.”

During the March 4 Senate hearing on e-sabong, Tolentino said he might present to senators Grade 6 or 7 students who have been able to place bets on Pitmasters Live, the e-sabong platform owned by gambling tycoon Charlie “Atong” Ang, using an e-wallet app on their cellphones.

Tolentino made the statement after Globe Telecoms senior legal counsel Gilbert Escoto claimed it was impossible for minors or those aged below 18 years old to access Pitmasters Live through the GCash app, as all validated e-wallet users needed to submit valid IDs and photos.

The senator said e-wallets like GCash and Paymaya could be used for money laundering and terrorist funding if they can’t place safeguards to prevent minors from placing e-sabong bets.

GCash has yet to reveal its share of the P60-billion bets generated monthly by Pitmasters, which controls 95 percent of the e-sabong industry.

Paymaya, for its part, said it has received P580 million in bets from Pitmaster since February 8 this year.
