As political robotexts start blowing up voters’ phones, NTC stops Facebook, Lazada, Shopee from selling text blasters

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has issued an order preventing Facebook Marketplace, Lazada and Shopee from selling text blasting machines and other similar equipment on their platforms

NTC said the sale of these equipment is prohibited under the Radio Control Law and the agency’s memorandum circular on prohibition of portable cellular mobile repeater and portable cell site equipment.

Facebook, Lazada and Shopee were directed to appear before the NTC on Oct. 27 to explain why why they should not be held liable for allowing sales of these equipment.

“The NTC has not authorized the importation, manufacture, sale/distribution or type approval of the abovementioned equipment,” it pointed out.

NTC issued the cease-and-desist order after a number of mobile users complained about receiving text alerts announcing the presidential candidacy of former senator Bongbong Marcos.

The telco regulator immediately ordered an investigation into the emergency text alerts promoting Marcos’ candidacy.

Emergency text alerts are typically used during disasters.
