President Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Bong Go just admired pricey timepieces when they went to Greenbelt 5 over the weekend, Malacañang said Tuesday (October 5).
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said said the mall visit was a celebratory side trip after Duterte announced he’s retiring from politics after 2022.
Duterte accompanied Go in filing his certificate of candidacy for vice president at the Sofitel Garden Tent in Pasay before heading to the upscale Makati mall.
The President was snapped strolling along a mall wing where shops sell luxury timepieces like Panerai and Breitling, which retail for six- or seven figures.
“The President said that he felt like a normal citizen who could go on malling, dine outside, and probably visit old friends and acquaintances,” Roque said in a statement.
He clarified that Duterte did not buy any fancy watch but stopped by to chat with someone he knew. “He went inside because he personally knew the tindera selling those watches. They are his amiga since he was still a mayor 15 years ago and had a few minutes of conversation,” Roque added.
It’s worth asking how Duterte knew the saleslady of a lush watch store if he indeed “prides himself in wearing inexpensive watches.”
