Yuka Saso, a 19-year-old Filipina golfer supported by bilyonaryo Ricky Razon, has made history by winning the US Women’s Open on Sunday (June 6).
A teary-eyed Saso pumped her fist after sinking the third playoff hole at the Olympic Club in California, beating Japan’s Nasa Hataoka in the competition.
The young golfer shook off two early double bogeys, coming back with late birdies at 16 and 17 in a two-over 73 to thrust herself into a playoff with a four-under total of 280 for 72 holes. This is her first US LPGA championship, on top of two Japan LPGA victories.
“First I’d like to thank my family, I won’t be here without them,” Saso said.
The teenage golfing wonder also expressed gratitude to Razon and ICTSI for their support.
“To my sponsor who helped me, I’m really thankful. To all my friends and fans in PH and Japan, I’m really thankful,” Saso said.
Filipinos in the US, including Fil-Am comedian Jo Koy, are ecstatic over Saso’s victory.
Pro golfer Rory McIlroy also congratulated Saso for her achievement.
