The GMA chairman and CEO revealed that its main free TV channel, GMA-7, was not only number one with a people audience share of 54 percent, but even its GMA’s UHF channel, Good TV (formerly GMA News TV), was number two with 7.4 percent share based on the most recent National Urban Ratings (NUTAM) data.
Gozon said GTV was ahead of its biggest rival,TV-5 of bilyonaryo Manny V. Pangilinan, with a “very distant” share of seven percent.
As a further show of its dominance, Gozon said GMA’s digital terrestrial TV (DTT) channel, Heart of Asia, ranked fifth in the ratings scoreboard with 4.9 percent share through the first three months this year. The Heart of Asia channel is among the come-ons offered by GMA on its DTT box which sold a million units in just six months after its launch in June 2020.
Gozon claimed GMA had already leapfrogged ABS-CBN in both reach and viewership even before the National Telecommunications Commission ordered it to stop its free TV broadcast on May 5.
He said GMA’s NUTAM ratings hit 33.8 percent from January to May 5 2020 versus ABS-CBN’s 30.2 percent. GMA nearly doubled its market share to 58.9 percent from May 6 to December 31, 2020.
“2020 as GMA Network’s 70th year in the broadcast industry and what a memorable year that was.. (It) was by far, our best year in our history,” said Gozon during GMA’s virtual annual stockholders’ meeting on 19 May 2021. GMA more than doubled its profits to P6 billion in 2020.
GMA is expected to launch 100 local and foreign TV programs, a new DTT channel, and the NCAA basketball games. Its current top raters are the romantic comedy series, First Yaya; Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho; Encantadia; and 24 Oras.
