Robina Gokongwei hopes Ateneo priests pray for UP win vs UST in crucial hoops showdown

University of the Philippines men’s basketball team top booster Robina Gokongwei has jokingly asked Jesuit priests to pray for a victory of her Fighting Maroons team.

University of the Philippines men’s basketball team top booster Robina Gokongwei has jokingly asked Jesuit priests to pray for a victory of her Fighting Maroons team.

“I hope the beloved priests from Ateneo officiating the mass tonight will pray for U.P.’s win on Wednesday,” said Gokongwei during her eulogy at the wake of her father, bilyonaryo John Gokongwei, who died on November 9, 2019 at age 93.

Apparently, Gokongwei thinks her UP players need all the help they can get (including divine intervention) to beat the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers that whupped the Fighting Maroon three straight times this year.

UP and UST will meet again on November 13 with the winner advancing the best-of-three finals against the undefeated Ateneo Blue Eagles.

Gokongwei shared that her father knew that the Fighting Maroons was her number one passion even though the team has been a perennial doormat since winning the championship in 1986.

“I liked his (John) words of encouragement, congratulating me for simple wins. But this year, he had other reasons for congratulating me. He had forgotten about the business and was now congratulating me for the UP men’s basketball team entering the Final Four for the second year in a row. He knew what his daughter really loved the most. That’s why I loved him for that,” said Gokongwei.
