Ricky Yanson’s PFF bid faces thorny path as Nonong Araneta seeks relection

Ricky Yanson’s quest to head the Philippine Football Federation won’t be easy.

Ricky Yanson’s quest to head the Philippine Football Federation won’t be easy.

PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta is seeking a third consecutive term, citing the need to protect the sports from fighting.

Araneta, who was first elected in 2011, is backed by Ricky’s younger brother, Leo Rey, owner of Ceres-Negros FC, the top club in the Philippines Football League (PFL).

The Yanson siblings are locked in an intra-corporate feud involving the country’s biggest bus operator Vallacar Transit Inc.

“Running as vice president was just an idea for supporting somebody for president. But because of the circumstances right now, I am forced to run again to protect football from the infighting.

And what I perceive is that if I don’t run, I think there will be a lot of people running and this will not be good for football because it will really create a disunity among member associations,” Araneta said.
