The Forbes list of Filipino dollar billionaires swelled by nearly half to 17 in 2019 with the entry of the six children of the late shopping mall magnate Henry Sy and Century Tuna owner Ricardo Po.
Topping the 2019 list of the world’s billionaires as tracked by Forbes magazine is former senator Manny Villar with $5.5 billion or nearly doubly from his net worth of $3 billion in 2018.
Villar replaced Sy who topped the list for 11 straight years with a peak fortune of $20 billion in 2018.
His six children had a combined net worth of $13.3 billion and ranked between numbers eight and 12 on the 2018 list namely: Hans Sy ($2.4 billion); Herbert Sy ($2.4 billion); Harley Sy ($2.2 billion); Henry “Big Boy” Sy Jr. ($2.2 billion); Tessie Sy-Coson ($2.2 billion);and Elizabeth Sy ($1.9 billion).
Another newcomer is Po who debuted at number 16 with a net worth of $1.2 billion.
Aside from Villar, three other bilyonaryos were in the world’s top 500 richest humans: John Gokongwei ($5.1 billion); Ricky Razon ($4.8 billion); and Lucio Tan ($4.4 billion).
Aside from Sy, the late Metrobank Chair George Ty dropped out of the list following his death in November 2018.
