A consortium composed of Singaporean, Philippine and Chinese firms has submitted an unsolicited proposal to build a $3 billion mass railway system in Cebu.
According to the Department of Transportation, the proposed light railway system would be constructed above ground from Talisay to Carcar and from Mandaue to Danao, with an airport line from Mandaue to the Manila Cebu International Airport (MCIA).
?The LRT will become the main arterial backbone of Cebu?s mass transportation, with other ITS [Integrated Terminal System] components as feeder lines serving internal peripheries,? Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said.
Tugade said the ITS aims to synchronize various transportation solutions to address the worsening traffic congestion in Metro Cebu.
The components of the ITS include include a point-to-point (P2P) bus system similar to MyBus, which is already operational in the city; a monorail in Lapu-Lapu City; the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and the LRT.
The monorail, meanwhile, will become Mactan Island?s transport system, connecting the Mactan Cebu International Airport to different hotels and resorts in the tourist island.
