A day before the much awaited bidding for the third telco franchise at 10 a.m. Nov. 7, Bilyonaryo was informed that a total of 14 companies and groups shelled out P1 million for the bid documents.
At least three major alliances are shaping up among the more than a dozen firms and groups bidding for the third telco franchise which President Rodrigo Duterte envisioned would smash the duopoly of PLDT-Salim-Smart and Globe Telecom.
The biggest of the emerging alliances is the group of Dennis Uy of Davao composed of:
1) China Telecom
3) ISM Communication
4) PT&T of Buddy Zamora and Bong Tan
The Davao group reportedly has Presidential Economic Adviser Michael Yang, a Chinese national, as its main backer.
An equally big-time contender is the group of namesake Dennis Uy of Pampanga composed of:
6) Telecom Tech Solution Inc.
7) Korea Telecom Corp.
The backers of this group are no pushovers ? former Presidential son Mikey Arroyo, Rizal Park Hotel and Leonel Waste Management chair Simon Paz. The group is also rumored to have the backing of former Special Assistant to the President Bong Go.
The third major alliance is led by former governor Luis ?Chavit? Singson:
8) LCS Group
The other companies which bought bidding papers were:
10) AMA Telecommunications Corp.
12) Telenor of Norway
13)Mobiltel Holding GmbH of Austria
14) SteamTech of former Senator Manny Villar (disclosed Sunday it withdrew from the race)
Apparently, the strategy is to make multiple bids and form alliances and submit the requirements after the bidding results.
It remains to be seen whether these alliances would change depending on the outcome of the bidding as most of the participants have common
links or mutual ties between them.
